New Zealand Dollars

The New Zealand Dollar is the official currency of New Zealand. It is also circulated among Niue, Tokelau, Cook Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. The New Zealand dollar, similar to the Australian and United states dollars, is divided into 100 cents.

It utilizes the dollar sign ($), though it may be written out as “NZ$” to represent that it belongs to New Zealand instead of one of the other dollar denominated types of currency in the world.

One oddity of the New Zealand Dollar is that it is sometimes called a “kiwi”. This is an informal name, and one that is probably in use because of New Zealand’s association with the kiwi fruit. Also, the 1 dollar coin in use in New Zealand depicts a kiwi on the front of it.

The dollar of New Zealand is one of the top ten most traded currencies in the entire world, behind U.S. dollars, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars, Yen, British pound sterlings, Euros, and several others.

The New Zealand dollar is used by 5 different territories, and it’s official source is the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The dollar is pegged by the Cook Islands dollar at par, and it is circulated by using a collection of different coins and banknotes.

The coins in circulation are in denominations of 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, and 2 dollars. The banknotes in circulation for this currency are in denominations of 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 20 dollars, 50 dollars, and 100 dollars. The coins are made up of many different types of materials, including copper plated steel, nickel plated steel, and aluminum bronze.

The coins all feature Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side, with different depictions, including the kiwi, the silver fern, and mount Taranaki, among others, on the reverse side. The current 10 cent, 20 cent, and 50 cent coins actually came into circulation in July of 2006, though the 1 dollar and 2 dollar coins did not actually circulate until February of 1991.

The colors of the banknotes currently in circulation also vary, featuring colors such as green, purple, red, blue, and orange. These notes also feature a variety of different people and images famous to New Zealand; these depictions include Sir Edmund Hillary, Mount Cook, Kate Sheppard, White Camellia flowers, Queen Elizabeth II, Parliament Buildings, Lord Rutherford of Nelson, and the Nobel Prize medal, among others.
